Get on the Bus
Get
on the Bus is a program that brings children and their guardians/caregivers
from throughout the state of California to visit their mothers and fathers
in prison. Children are devastated when a parent is incarcerated. Young
people need to maintain ongoing contact with their parent by mail, phone
or in-person visits. This means affordable telephone rates to call their
parents. It also means being able to visit them in prison. Get on the
Bus answers that need.

“If restorative justice were applied to women and children affected
by the criminal justice system, an alternative
system
would be born,” says Suzanne Jabro, executive director of Woman
and Criminal Justice.
“Eighty percent of women in prison are there for non-violent drug related offenses. Women are anesthetizing themselves from the pain of their pasts, especially from sexual and physical abuse in childhood. They need therapy and drug counseling. Their children need to be in relationship with them, in therapy, in counseling. Women need to live closer to their children in therapeutic communities where the whole family has a chance for healing.”
